How do I get a housing contract and application?

A: Once a student is admitted to IU, has a university ID number, and has set up a IU Network ID and passphrase, s/he may submit an housing application and contract online.

How are housing assignments made?

A: Current residents are assigned first during the spring semester. Beginning in mid-May, assignments are made for new applicants. New applicants to learning communities are assigned first and then all other new students are assigned based on the priority date. This is the date the housing contract/application and fee were received.

Can I request to live in a specific residence hall?

A: New, first-year, undergraduate students may only request a neighborhood. Neighborhoods are geographical groupings of residence halls and on-campus apartments where services such as libraries, computer labs, food courts, convenience stores, and dining rooms are located nearby. Returning residents, graduate, and transfer students may request specific buildings.

Which neighborhood is best? / Which neighborhood should I request?

A: All the neighborhoods offer basically the same services. Which is best for you depends on your interests. Read about the learning communities and neighborhoods and request those which are the most attractive to you.

Can I request a specific roommate?

A: Yes. Roommate requests must be mutual, from members of the same gender, and received by May 1, 2013. The requested roommate's IU network ID and full name are required to complete the housing contract and application.

To be assigned to one of the LCs requiring additional approval both roommates must be approved for the community and the assignment preferences of the pair must be identical. In LCs that do not require additional approval, if one roommate requests a LC and the other does not and both list "roommate" as the first preference, the pair will be assigned to the LC.

We don't guarantee that we can honor all roommate requests, so if you really want to be together, be sure your preferences match and list roommates first on your preferences.

What are room and board cost for a year?

A: Room and board rates are set by the Board of Trustees each year. Costs vary depending on residence hall amenities, type of room, and learning community fees . Visit the current rate table for current cost information.

I'm a 21st Century Scholar. Is my application fee waived?

A: We will waive $100 of the $300 application fee for 21st Century Scholars in the IU Covenant program. Payment of the $200 is deferred until the fall semester billing. When completing the housing application online, the system should be aware of a your involvement in the IU Covenant program. At the end of the housing application, you should see a payment due of $200 and a payment method of Bursar. If you happen to see a charge of $300 due, do not submit the application.
